CHINA POLICE CLAMPS DOWN ON PROSTITUTES TO CURB ITS HIV/AIDS EPIDEMIC

After an extensive report done by China most watched TV channel; CCTV, police trooped out in their thouusands and carried out a major crackdown on the sex trade in China’s ‘sin city’ of Dongguan as the country tries to get to grips with its HIV problem.

China Central Television (CCTV), aired a half-hour report on Sunday chronicling what appeared to be extensive and open prostitution in five towns across Dongguan and secretly shot footage showed scantily clad women parading on a stage and managers of venues speaking openly about prostitution services.

The CCTV report was widely watched across China and followed with interest and widely commented on on social media.


Prostitution was outlawed in China after the Communist revolution in 1949, but after economic reforms three decades ago it returned with a vengeance.

Since then the trade has been blamed for helping fuel a rise in HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases that is believed to have reached epidemic proportions since the 90s. During the raid, over a hundred prostitutes were arrested and close to 15 sex centres were shut down.


China authorities said more than 2,700 sex workers was infected with the dreaded virus as detected by their last month research.

Tinapa traders threatens to close down Tinapa

Traders at the Tinapa Business and Leisure Resort Calabar, Cross River State have applied to the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) for permission to evacuate their goods following poor patronage.

The Traders at the resort, according to the Area Comptroller of the NCS for Cross River State, Calabar Free Trade Zone and Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Bamidele Akande, have written to Customs, informing it of their desire to quit after 60 days of receipt of the letter.

Akande said during a courtesy call on Security Adviser to the governor, Mr. Rekpene Bassey, that the retail outlet operators wrote seeking permission from Customs to evacuate their goods from Tinapa, which also enjoys a free trade zone status.

He also said businessmen from Aba in Abia State were reluctant to do business at Tinapa because of the bad state of the Calabar-Ikot Ekpene-Aba road and the shallowness of the Calabar water channel which does not allow bigger vessels to come in with imported goods.
According to him, his mission in the state is to see to the improvement of relationship between Customs and the state government and its people.

He said: "Our focus is effective communication so that the people do not run afoul of the law on import and export and others. Trade facilitation is our work. The state government has a lot to do to improve revenue generation at the port. On our part, we shall strive to see that there are no bottlenecks in our revenue collection efforts.’’

Bassey assured Akande that there was no cause for alarm as the Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) has taken over the management of Tinapa and appealed to the traders to reconsider their decision.
He commended the smooth relationship between Customs and the state government, saying that the cooperation is evident in the participation of NCS personnel in the Calabar Carnival.
Bassey said the Calabar-Itu-Ikot Ekpene-Aba road was bad because it was under pressure due to the heavy trucks that ply it and appealed to the federal government to repair the highway.

He added that as the NCS generates revenue, government should redistribute it to "cushion the biting effect of unemployment and poverty in the society."

"Our porous borders are responsible for the influx of arms and ammunition and account for nearly 60 per cent of Nigeria’s security and crime concerns presently. The NCS would therefore do well to work in concert, coordination and collaboration with other security agencies to stem this ugly trend. "It is also needful at this point in our history to establish an independent border patrol agency as is done in the United States to effectively secure our vast land, air and maritime borders. Another concern of general nature is the high inflow of sub-standard, inferior, pirated and adulterated goods into Nigeria,’’ he said.

Dangote Invests $9 bn in Lekki Free Trade Zone-8000 Engineers to be employed

The President of Dangote Group of Companies, Alhaji Aliko Dangote at the weekend unveiled a lofty plan to invest a whopping sum of over $9 billion (an equivalent of N1.53 trillion) in Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ) alone.

Consequently, Dangote said the investment, which will be committed to the development of Dangote Refineries and Petrochemical Company, would benefit no fewer than 8,000 engineers aside from other jobs to be created. He disclosed the new plan on Sunday after Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) formally introduced to the host communities signaling the formal takeoff of the multi-billion naira investment at the LFTZ.

Court orders re-arraignment of Fani-Kayode for money laundering

A Lagos Federal High Court on Monday, ordered the re-arraignment of former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, facing charges of money laundering.

Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia, gave the order while ruling on an application of objection filed by Fani-Kayode’s Counsel, Mr Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), challenging the competence of the charges.



The prosecutor, Mr Festus Keyamo, on Jan. 27, filed an amended 40-count charge bothering on money laundering against Fani-Kayode and urged the court to order him take his plea.

Fani-Kayode was first arraigned on Feb. 11, 2013 on a 47-count charge of money laundering.

Fani-Kayode had pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail.
In the charge, the accused was alleged to have transacted funds exceeding N500, 000 without going through due financial process.

The accused was also alleged to have accepted cash payments to the tune of about N100 million while he was the Minister of Aviation and that of Culture and Tourism, respectively.

The prosecutor told the court that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 15(1) (a) (b) (c) (d) and 15 (2) (a) (b) of the Money Laundering (prohibition) Act, 2004.

But Adedipe objected to the amended charge preferred against his client.

He argued that the amended charge was invalid as it did not disclose the identity of the source from whom the accused allegedly obtained the money.

He further submitted that his client was therefore not in a position to take his plea in the matter and described the charge as “ incompetent”.

Ruling on the application on Monday, Ofili-Ajumogobia ordered the accused to take his plea.

She held that it was an abject misconception on the part of the defence counsel to have raised the objection in the first place.

“The charge against the accused is valid and hereby sustained.

“The objection raised by the defence counsel lacks merit and should not have been raised in the first place.

“The accused is hereby directed to plead to the charge.”

The judge also agreed with the Prosecution’s submission that the non disclosure of the identity of the giver or receiver of the money was immaterial and could not affect the validity of the charge.

She, therefore, adjourned the case to March 5 to enable the prosecutor re-arraign the accused on the charge of money laundering. (NAN)

World Bank to spend $80m on Redeemer University, 9 others

World Bank is set to spend at least $80m on 10 Africa Center of Excellence (ACE), in Nigeria.

World Bank Lead Economist Africa Education, Mr. Andreas Blom, stated this Monday, at a meeting of World Bank with 10 ACE, in Abuja.

He said the World Bank would build African capacity to solve Africa problems.

The 10 universities that were selected in Nigeria included, Redeemer University Mowe, Ogun state\ University of Ibadan, Ibadan (Africa Centre of Excellence for Genomic of Infectious Diseases, ACGID), African University of Science and Technology, Abuja, Pan African Material Institute, PAMI), Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (centre for Agricutural Development and Sustainable Environment), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (Center of Excellence on Neglected Tropical Diseases and Forensic Biotechnology), University of Jos (Phytomemedicine Research and Development, ACEPRD), University of Benin (Center for Excellence in Reproductive Health and Innovation), and University of Port-Harcourt (ACE Center for oil field Chemicals).

Due to the number of excellent proposals from Nigeria, three more universities were added they were, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (knowledge Park: A model for National Science Technology and Knowledge Park Initiative) STEM, Bayero University, Kano (African Centre of Excellence in Dryland Agriculture and Benue State University, Makurdi (Centre for Food Technology and Research (CEFTER) – Agriculture.

He said it was rather unfortunate that none of the African University is one of the first 500 universities in the world. And hope that soon the story would change.

He identified poverty as a major challenge in relation to food wastage, storage and health related challenges.

And he hoped that by the time ACE is able to engage the continent, at least 25 universities in the continent would make the first 500 ranking in the world universities.

He stressed the importance of working together with World Bank through commitment and hardship.

“For Nigeria to have 10 out of 18 Centers of ACEs, it shows its clear leadership in the continent” he said.

The Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission, NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie, in his address said ACE project was initiated. In 2013 by the governments of Republic of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal and Togo, with support from World Bank.

He said the project is meant to build capacity in competitively selected institutions to produce in-demand highly and applied research, and secondly to facilitate rapid development within the African sub-region through the strengthening of Centres of Excellence by way of collaborations and partnering in the sharing of talents, skilled labour and higher education services.

“Under the ACE programme, grants of up to US$8 million would be awarded to winning proposals, from various institutions across Africa consisting of a lead institution and collaborating partners. The primary focus would be on science, technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Health Sciences and Agricultural Sciences.

A total of 55 proposals were received, all of which were carefully evaluated by a team of experts assembled by NUC”. Okojie said.

Sources connected with the Estate tell TMZ ... they never suggested the Beatles catalog was worth ZERO -- to the contrary they agree it's worth around $1.5 BILLION.

That said ... sources say there's a reason they put a big fat zero in the Beatles column when they filed tax returns just after Michael died. They say there was a $700 million loan taken against the purchase of the catalog, bringing the net value to $800 million. Michael and Sony were 50/50 partners ... which means Michael's share was around $400 million.

Now the debt. Michael leveraged his interest to the hilt -- he borrowed $320 million against the catalog. And He owed another $200 million in personal debt ... And that's why they put ZERO.

One bone of contention -- although the Estate values the catalog at $1.5 billion, the IRS says it's DOUBLE that amount.

Estate sources say the IRS is also off base on the issue of MJ's likeness and image, which they valued at only $2,105 at the time he died. The IRS says it's worth more like $434 million.

Our sources say you have to look back at June, 2009. They say Michael made zilch on his likeness and image for the 15 YEARS before his death -- no commercials, not even T-shirts ... no one wanted to be associated with him -- at least commercially.

And finally ... as for the Jackson 5 music collection -- the Estate says it was worth $11.2 mil when Michael died ... the IRS says $45.5 mil.

So the sources say after settling up with Motown, MJ's interest was a lot less than people think. The Estate would gladly sell Michael's rights even today for $45.5 mil ... they say they'd sell it for $30 mil!

Timaya Inspired Me To Do More In The House Of God- Djinee

Do you have expectations? Where do you want to be in five years?


I have surpassed where I had planned five years back. Everything na God hand e dey. I want to be able to employ labour. I want to help people. I thought about this the other day. I didn’t know you would ask me. I want to make enough money to increase my tithe. Because some few weeks back I met somebody that advised me to (pay my tithe). When I did the tithing thing, I felt so cool. I was like “Man, this feels good!” I am not that person that will broadcast what I do for God. I believe in that part of the Bible that says, “Don’t let your right know what your left hand is doing.” I am not against those who broadcast the philanthropy or aids.


Do you mean you too pay tithes to the church?


Yes, I think it is a good thing. In fact, if there is a way one can reach an understanding with the church to help people in any way, one should do it. It really feels good. I am happy to do it every time. Where I worship, the money is not for the pastor or to some people. It belongs to the church and you will see what it is being used for. I don’t like when pastors live in affluence, while members live in poverty. I believe in empowerment projects for the youth and those who are poor in the church. I would give my tithe to a church that caters for its members. Funny enough, if I tell you the person that really encouraged me to give my tithe, you wouldn’t believe it.


Who encouraged you to pay tithe?


It was Timaya. I know you will be stunned. A few weeks ago, I was in Business Class together with Timaya. We were chatting when he said that people do not understand why God blesses him. He said, he doesn’t miss paying his tithe.


You mean Timaya encouraged you to pay tithe?

Yes. Let me put it this way. It was not that I wasn’t paying before, but he encouraged me to give more. People wouldn’t believe it. BIEBER THROWING EGGS INTO NEIGHBOUR'S HOUSE

The L.A. County District Attorney has surveillance video that should make it pretty easy to prosecute Justin Bieber for allegedly egging his neighbor's house ... TMZ has learned.

Law enforcement sources tell us ... The L.A. County Sheriff's Department's recommendation to file felony vandalism charges focuses on 2 pieces of critical evidence:

-- Surveillance video during the raid at Bieber's house. Our sources say ... the video shows Bieber in the vicinity of the area where the egging occurred at the time of the attack. You don't actually see him throwing eggs, but he's there. Sources connected with Bieber told TMZ earlier the video shows nothing, but that's NOT true. The Sheriff's Dept. has given the video to the D.A.

-- A video obtained by TMZ in which you hear what sure sounds like Justin Bieber verbally going at it with the neighbor in the middle of the egging. At one point you ever hear Bieber scream, "F*** you! I got another one for you actually." The video is too dark to actually see him.

In addition there are 2 eyewitnesses ... the neighbor ... who openly has beef with Bieber -- and his 13-year-old daughter. The girl made a 911 call which our sources say matches the time Bieber was seen on the surveillance video.

The 2 videos make it almost impossible for Bieber to deny he was throwing the eggs -- it would be shocking if the D.A. doesn't file criminal charges.

The open question -- will the D.A. file the case as a FELONY or a misdemeanor? The neighbor has submitted repair estimates totaling around $20,000. If a vandal destroyed an expensive car the D.A. would probably view it as a felony. The issue is whether the D.A. will appreciate that eggs can cause that much damage on an expensive home.

The D.A's decision should come down this week.
